With the Special Election over, it is time to lick our wounds and move on. Hopefully our U.S. Representatives will have learned that you cannot take anything in our state for granted and will begin engaging their base to work towards their re-election early in the game. We cannot allow Tea-Party Republicans to trounce us again. We must also double our effort to get Governor Deval Patrick re-elected.

Haverhill Democratic Caucus
February 11, 2010 - 6:30 PM

Registered Democrats for all seven wards in Haverhill held a caucus at the Haverhill Citizens Center on Welcome Street to elect delegates and alternatives to the 2010 Massachusetts Democratic Convention.

The Convention will be held on June 4th and June 5th at the DCU Center in Worcester. At that time, Democrats from across the state will gather to endorse statewide candidates.

Running as delegate or voting at the caucus was open to all those who are registered Democrats in Haverhill as of December 31, 2009. All ballots were written and secret. Those not elected as delegates or alternatives could apply to be add-on delegates in the following categories: A short business meeting of the Haverhill Democratic City Committee to discuss upcoming events followed the caucus.

Anyone seeking information about Democratic City Committee activities, should call Bill Cox, its Chairman at 978-374-6297.

Governor Deval Patrick

On Wednesday, September 30, 2009, Governor Deval Patrick visited our fair city to announce a $1.68 million grant to help finance a parking garage that will be built near the downtown train station. Later, he attended a ribbon cutting and a reception for the Hamil Mill Lofts. What was exciting for GHO members was that Mr. Patrick invited his supporters (many of them GHO members) to have coffee with him at Maria's Family Restaurant on Essex Street. The Governor was very gracious, talked with everyone, and posed for pictures. Before leaving, he gave us and impromptu, rousing rallying speech.

The only fly in the ointment was the fact that there were very few pictures taken due to technical difficulties. However, whatever pictures we have, you will find here.

Take a look at this handout and please visit Governor Patrick's Web site if you would like to volunteer.

U.S. Representative Niki Tsongas

BIOGRAPHY from Official Website -- Niki Tsongas is currently serving her second term representing the Fifth Congressional District of Massachusetts as a member of the US House of Representatives. She is the first woman to be elected to Congress from the state of Massachusetts in 25 years. Tsongas was elected in a Special Election in 2007 and holds the same seat that was held three decades earlier by her late husband, former Congressman, U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Paul Tsongas.
Congresswoman Tsongas serves on the House Armed Services Committee where she is working to ensure our servicemen and women have the equipment and protection they need. She also serves on the Budget Committee where she is focused on addressing the devastating deficits and debt created over the last eight years, while simultaneously shaping a national budget that will strengthen our economy and create jobs.

In 2009, Congresswoman Tsongas joined the Natural Resources Committee which oversees legislation related to domestic energy production, National Parks, rivers, forests, oceans and wilderness areas.

Niki Tsongas is known for her roots in the Fifth District and her years of public service to the region. The Lowell Sun described Niki Tsongas as having "experience, dedication and deep understanding of the 5th District as a whole."

And, the chairman of Lowell Publishing Co. - who has been with the Sun since 1959 - wrote only a few weeks into her tenure, "she clearly recognizes the role she needs to play in stimulating the economy of the region and is focused on job development."

Congresswoman Tsongas has three offices in Lowell, Lawrence and in Acton, as well as staff holding office hours in Haverhill to serve her constituents. She regularly holds Congress On Your Corner at supermarkets across the 5th District to make it as easy as possible for residents to connect with her about any issue of concern to them or to get assistance with problems they may have when dealing with federal agencies.

"History suggests that unless a progressive president is able to mobilize widespread support for significant change in the country at large, it's not enough to have a congressional majority." -- Doris K. Goodwin
