The Worst Man-made Catastrophe in Modern History

What comes next? BP CEO steps down and goes to Russia. Tropical Storm Bonnie fizzles out (fortunately). The cap appears to be holding as pressure slowly rises in pipe. Rigs are returning to continue oil slick containment.

Of course, even if everything goes well, there have been much damage done to the Gulf coastline, many people have lost their jobs and/or livelyhood, eleven men lost their lives, and animals (both wild and domesticated) have become casualties. And still no one knows what went wrong.

Here is a chronological rundown of events from the beginning until it's resolved (updated daily).

The President Takes on Wall Street

President Obama stepped into the lion's den on April 22nd when he addressed people from the financial sector at Cooper Union in New York City, a place where he spoke about reforming Wall Street and financial institutions two years ago.

The President praised the House for having passed reforms, and the Senate for working through their own
version, despite "the furious effort of industry lobbyists to shape this legislation to their special interests."

The President focused on four key elements of his plan for reform:

  1. Holding Wall Street accountable
  2. Protecting American families from unfair, abusive financial practices
  3. Closing the gaps in our financial system
  4. Reform critical to Market certainty and stable growth
