Everyone has the potential for leadership. We, at GHO, believe that we must not sit at the sidelines but work to ensure that the dream of a better life for all of us will come to fruition. Thus we have chosen to participate in both community service and political action.

President Obama said the following during his campaign: "There is something happening when Americans who are young in age and in spirit - who have never participated before in  politics - turn out in numbers we've never seen because they know in their hearts that this time must be different."

Many of us in GHO are young in spirit but not in age and yet have never before participated in politics. The candidacy of Barack Obama energized us, mobilized us, and made it our time too.

GHO is a grassroots organization located in Haverhill, Massachusetts, that was formed to support the election efforts of Barack Obama for President in 2008.  Now that Mr. Obama is in the White House, our objective is to make sure that he will be re-elected and to participate in activities that aid our neighbors, to discuss current topics of importance (both local and national), and to take action whenever necessary.  We believe that we cannot afford to sit back and do nothing with so much at stake.  We all need to do our share as citizens.

GHO is a self-governed organization with more than a hundred members, some of whom are community organizers themselves. As such, we were never part of the official campaign structure. There have been many opportunities before and since the election for folks in our group to volunteer with organizations that were having various events, and we have done so many times.

GHO is a group whose members have a variety of concerns, allowing every member of our group to have total freedom to choose which activities to participate in. We have never taken direction from any central authority, because that is against the nature of a volunteer grassroots organization. The Obama Campaign encouraged this and empowered people to participate in the political process in their own way. For instance, it provided lists for people to make calls from their homes rather than volunteering at a campaign office. It encouraged people to set up house meetings and initiate other events to help out the campaign and build a community.

Members of GHO have organized visibility events, voter registration, and community service events on our own, without any organization’s sponsorship. We strongly believe that it was because of this respect for the initiative and empowerment of the volunteers that the Obama campaign was so successful; and all of us at GHO would like to see it to continue the same way.

Joining GHO is easy. No membership fee or donation is required, only the desire to work towards making our neighborhoods and our country a little bit better.
