GHO is a grassroots organization whose members participate in various activities both locally and around the state. We have strong convictions as to issues that need to be addressed,
both political and social, and do our best to participate and try to make a difference.

your talents, your ideas and your best energies. John Spears, recently named
the State Director for Organizing for America (OFA) in Massachusetts, facilitated
the discussion and brought us up-to-date on OFA’s upcoming activities here
in Massachusetts and beyond -- see below.

Health Care Reform NOW!
Once more we had an event in support of a
strong public option insurance from
10:00 AM to Noon in Haverhill near the Farmer’s Market. We distributed
information to dispel the myths and rumors propogated by reform opponents, asked
people to sign our petitions (to be sent to Congresswoman Tsongas and Senator
Kerry), and held rally signs to increase awareness -- and express our support

National Service Day: Clothing and Household Items Drive
Many of us participated in another donation drive to help out the needy who rely on
Ruth's House. According to volunteers at Ruth's House, once more our group shined and our event was a great success.

We joined thousands of people across the nation to show our support for Health Care Reform (with a
strong public option); to pay tribute to the memory of Senator Edward M. Kennedy; and to remember all those who have been the victims of our broken health care system.

Recycling Canvas
Single-Stream recycling trial in Haverhill has met with some success in the trial areas, but many people are still unaware of the program and need to be informed.
Members of the group were urged to help canvas the
areas involved in groups of two in order to ensure the success of this new program.

Mayor Jim Fiorentini's Campaign Kickoff Event
A number of GHO members attended Mayor Fiorentini's kickoff event downtown at the Tap Restaurant, overlooking our new downtown river walk. The night was balmy and the mood of the crowd was very upbeat.
Many local dignitaries were present as well as some who are hoping to be elected
to the City Council or the School Committee.

We had the opportunity to join the
Salem
Democratic Town Committee and
Organization
for America (OFA) as they hosted a diverse panel of experts on health care
policy management and delivery.The panel provided information and perspectives on the current state of health care and ideas for reform.

Six members of GHO attended Congresswoman Nikki Tsongas' "Congress on Your Corner" event in Chelmsford, MA.....Unfortunately, even this location was too small to admit everyone, and we were very lucky that we were among the first five hundred to arrive....

Movie Night: "Sick Around the World"
We all gathered at Demet's and Bill's house to watch the PBS documentary. Once the movie was over, we discussed briefly the health care reform proposed by the House and supported by the Obama administration.

Haverhill Celebrates
This year's
Fourth of July celebration will be honoring our veterans at
the
Haverhill Stadium on Lincoln Avemue. Admission to the event will be $1.00 for everyone over six.
There will be plenty of food and activities for children of all ages.
The evening will culminate in fireworks at 10:00 PM.
